With bases scattered across the Middle East, the United States has had an established presence in the region for decades. 40 to 50,000 troops are stationed there, across eight permanent bases and several temporary sites. The biggest site is the one targeted by Iran in a missile launch on Monday – the Al Udeid base in Qatar.
